TASK 5 – You're a Politician!
You have decided to represent the members of your community by going into an area of government. You need to decide which level of government you will run for after comparing the three main levels: local, state and federal.
YOUR TASK:
Activity 1 – Responsibilities of Government
Identify the responsibilities of the three levels of government. Use Sheet 1 to help with task.
Activity 2 - Responsibilities of Government
Explore an issue in the news associated with one level of government. Summarise the issue and give your personal point of view on it. Write a letter to the relevant minister on the issue. List the rights, roles and responsibilities of voters. Use Sheet 2 to help with task.
Activity 3 – Separation of Power
Identify the powers of governments in relation to law: legislative (creation), executive (carrying out) and judicial (oversight). Use Sheet 3 to help with task.
Activity 4 - Responsible and Representative Government
Identify reasons for electing representatives and qualities of a good representative. Use Sheet 4 to help with task.
Activity 5 - How does Parliament Work?
Investigate the members of State and Federal parliament. Use Sheet 5 to help with task.
Activity 6 - Decision Time!
Now you must make your choice. What level of government will you run for? Why?

Why would you be a good representative?
Use Sheet 6 to help with task.
Activity 7 - Presentation
Plan a mini election campaign - posters, speeches, issues, etc
