Canberra: A Capital Experience
TASK 6 – Canberra: A Capital Experience
INTRODUCTION:
Canberra is a young capital in a young country, but it does have parallels with other leading cities of the world. For example, Canberra, like Paris, is a planned city. Just as the Baron Haussmann laid out the boulevards of the French capital in the time of the Empire, or as the French architect L'Enfant designed Washington to be a showpiece of civic architecture, so Canberra's streets were laid out in accordance with a grand scheme. Like Washington's Capitol, our Parliament House occupies the central hill, with the city planned around dramatic north/south and east/west axes. Our national government sits here. The highest court of the land sits here. Many of the most important monuments in the country are here, and they're visited by millions of Australians every year. Why not spend some time in Canberra and see yet another side of Australia?
YOUR TASK:
Your class will be going to Canberra this year. How can you convince your teachers, parents and other students that Canberra is a worthwhile educational and fun experience for your class. Make a list of attractions that your class can visit while there. You need to cover all subject areas (English, Human Society and its Environment, Mathematics, Creative and Practical Arts, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Science and Technology). You have three days to spend in Canberra and a budget of $300 per student. You can use a planning sheet to organise your research.
Points to consider
Create a presentation suitable for the P&C, teachers and students that will convince them that your itinerary is the best one for your class to use. Use Powerpoint to create a slide show of where you would go and include a Word document that shows the cost of the excursion.
